Preparing Your Refrigerator for Relocation

Moving a refrigerator can be tricky, but with the right preparation, you can ensure it arrives at your new home in perfect condition. At NC Moving and Storage Solutions (NCMSS), we understand that large appliances like refrigerators require special care during a move. Follow these steps to prepare your refrigerator properly and make your moving day smoother.

Step 1: Empty and Clean the Refrigerator

Before anything else, remove all food items from the fridge and freezer. Plan by using up perishable items or donating them. Once the fridge is empty, clean it thoroughly with a mild soap solution to remove any spills, stains, or odors. Be sure to dry the interior completely to avoid mold or mildew buildup during the move.

Step 2: Defrost the Freezer

If your refrigerator has a freezer, it’s essential to defrost it at least 24 hours before the move. Turn off the fridge and open the freezer door to allow ice to melt. Place towels around the base to absorb any water that accumulates. This step helps prevent leaks during transport, keeping the rest of your belongings safe from water damage.

Step 3: Disconnect and Secure

Unplug the refrigerator and disconnect any water supply lines if your unit has an ice maker or water dispenser. Wrap the power cord and secure it to the back of the fridge to prevent it from dragging or getting damaged during the move. If there are any removable parts, like shelves or drawers, take them out and pack them separately to avoid breakage.

Step 4: Protect the Refrigerator

Wrap your refrigerator with moving blankets or padded covers to protect it from dings and scratches. If possible, secure the doors shut with strong tape or a bungee cord to keep them from swinging open during transport.

Step 5: Let It Sit

Once your refrigerator is in its new location, allow it to sit unplugged for a few hours to let the coolant settle. After that, you can plug it in and begin using it again.

Following these steps ensures that your refrigerator is ready for a safe and smooth move. If you need help with packing, loading, or transporting your appliances, contact NC Moving and Storage Solutions. We’re here to make your move as seamless as possible!
